2010/2011 Course Descriptions

IEW – Ancient/ Medieval Writing Themes

Ancient history teaches progressively through the nine IEW units, plus some poetry, grammar, and vocabulary. Themes focus on six major ancient civilizations: Sumer, Egypt, Israel, Babylon, Greece, and Rome.(1ST semester)

Medieval history focuses on civilization in the Middle Ages—major figures and events come alive as students write, using IEW’s stylistic techniques and the nine structural units. These 29 lessons acquaint young learners with Charlemagne, the Vikings, William the Conqueror, Knighthood, geniuses of the Renaissance, and more! (2nd semester)

Apologia-

Science – Experiment based curriculum that mirrors the anatomy/physiology curriculum of the 4th – 6th graders.

Anatomy/Physiology- Beginning with a brief history of medicine and a peek into cells and DNA, your students will voyage through fourteen lessons covering many subjects, such as the body systems: skeletal, muscular, respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, nervous and more!

Physical Science- This course covers such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. Can be taken for high school credit.

Chemistry- This course covers significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermo chemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium. For high school credit

Spanish –

Conversational Spanish-   This class is directed at middle/high school students looking to build a vocabulary and become comfortable speaking the language with a wide variety of situations and settings.   We will use themed vocabulary blocks to work on accent, correct usage of common phrases including introductions, times, dates, etc.

Spanish 2-   This class emphasizes the development of students’ conversational skills while also offering intensive instruction in reading, writing, and grammar, understanding the elements of sentence structure in Spanish. For high school credit (Using Spanish Now 2)

Apologetics- (High School)

This course gives the student dozens of excellent, well reasoned answers to the classic objections against the Catholic Faith. It covers all the fundamental truths of the Faith providing both facts and sound logical reasoning.  (Using Laux, Carroll textbooks)  For high school credit.

Art-

1st – 3rd grade Art – Explore the elements of art through creative projects: drawing, painting, sculpture, and art history ( great masterpieces of the past). Max #8 students

4th – 6th grade Art – Develop understanding of the elements of art and principles of design: drawing, painting, sculpture, and art history (art styles of masters). Max # 12 students

7th – 9th grade Art – Use the elements of art and principles of design in compositions: drawing, painting, sculpture, and art history (art styles of masters). Max # 12 students

Speech-

Readers’ Theater (Grades 1-6) – In Readers’ Theater, students will dramatically interpret plays and adapted literary works by reading aloud together.  Scripts will not be memorized, as in a staged production; rather, students will tell each story using good vocal delivery techniques, including characterization, eye contact, clarity and pronunciation of speech, pace, poise, and projection.  At the end of the semester, students will present a polished production for the Immaculate H.E.A.R.T. open house. Max # 12 students

Varsity Speech (Grades 7-12) – Students in Varsity Speech will learn how to construct and deliver a speech in these basic speech genres: dramatic interpretation, limited preparation, and public address speaking. While some writing is required, the technical aspects of delivery will be the focus of this class, including variety of pitch, volume, rate, rhythm; effective, purposeful movement; narration and characterization; clarity and pronunciation of speech; and the use of a forensics notebook.  Class work will aim toward tournament competition, and the winners in each genre will present their speeches at the Immaculate H.E.A.R.T. open house and end of year program.  For high school credit.

Foundations in Personal Finance – This high school curriculum covers personal finance through an engaging and age-appropriate video series taught by Dave Ramsey.  (1st semester)

High School Essay Intensive- This course presents tools and tips for tackling the timed opinion-based essay as currently included in the SAT exam, and introduces strategies for writing a well-crafted personal essay for a college application through an engaging video series taught by Anthony Pudewa.  (2nd semester- 8 weeks)

Ballroom Dancing- Gemini Dance Studio will introduce boys and girls to the SLR method of dancing. (2nd semester – 8weeks)

Immaculate HEART Chorus– This chorus is open to female and male singers.  Emphasis is on the development of vocal tone quality, a choral sound, note reading, sight reading, and part singing.  Students develop these skills through a variety of musical styles and literature including Christmas, sacred, and show tunes.  During the classes, special emphasis is placed on the Principles of Proper Singing which include, but are not limited to:  (1) posture, (2) breathing techniques, (3) sound production, (4) embouchure, and (5) diction/articulation.  The chorus will present a short concert at the conclusion of each semester in December and May.

*Each chorus member must have demonstrated singing ability. Each student will be auditioned before registration is accepted.  Prior to the start of class in the fall, each chorus member will be vocal range-tested for placement within the chorus.

Credit:  1/2 (2 semesters, Jr. High:  Pass/Fail, Sr. High:  Pass/Fail

Drama- This class is an introduction to both the backstage and on stage elements of theatre.  Students will learn basic performance skills, such as character creation, voice and movement techniques, and theatre etiquette and terminology.  Students will create simple costume and set pieces. (2nd semester) Production TBD
